The millions of blacks that lived and died under colonialism and aparthied are again marginalized so that middle aged white men can stroke their egos and claim their Oscars for a "documentary"?!Dave Harrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04281146688216246485noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8622019196225604972.post-83970104081557387672013-02-27T04:00:06.354-08:002013-02-27T04:00:06.354-08:00An interesting view, however, I don't see what...An interesting view, however, I don't see what they did in Sugar Man as whitewashing as such, but rather, telling the story through their own lens, based on their specific experience of that time, and what was happening within their social circle. The world knows that black children were killed during that struggle, but how many even know that any white students were involved.

Incidently, as I recall from the movie, these were university going students, whereas the real terror during the anti-apartheid struggle was at black high schools.

The focus was the influence Rodrigues had on that group of people - who believe the story of is death and who idolize him.

Documentaries are made from various angles, and this is what makes them interesting in my opinion. But the entire point of my article is HOW they tell the story is of utmost importance. Many of my friends in other countries also remarked that they did not know that white schoolkids were involved in the student uprisings of the 80s or that Rodriquez songs were sung by the schoolkids! The whitewashing leaves the viewer with a skewed perspective of a very important part of our history. The POINT of _Searching for Sugarman_ was to tell the story of the 70's singer, Rodriguez, who was and is enormously popular in South Africa. This was not the film for telling the story of apartheid, as worthwhile as is.

That is and has been the story of other films. Thanks for telling us that he was also popular in Oz and NZ - that I did not know.

Nowhere does the film insinuate or say that the resistance to apartheid came about because of Rodriguez or among South African whites. It says that this artist was popular among South African whites at a time of the overturning of apartheid.

Your blog post "whitewashes" the facts of a great film about a lost artist set in the context of South Africa going through the turmoil of apartheid.Terry In Africahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12891608051384552544noreply@blogger.com
